Hi everyone. This is Clean Air Kate!
Have you ever heard of an Ozone Action Day? Global Green Pals’ Founder Malini Goel was in New York on a hot summer day when an ozone action alert was in place. She felt sad she could not go outside because the pollution levels were high.
So what’s ozone? Ozone is a colorless, natural gas that can be found in two of the layers of the atmosphere.
The middle layer called the stratosphere is far from the Earth’s surface. Ozone in the stratosphere helps protect us from harmful UV rays.
The bottom atmosphere layer at Earth’s surface is called the troposphere. When ozone gets into it, the air becomes polluted and turns into smog. This toxic air is bad to breathe, especially if you have breathing problems like asthma and emphysema. Lots of kids have asthma. Even some of my friends.
When ozone levels become harmful for humans, the government can declare an Ozone Action Day. On these days we need to make sure we take extra care and avoid going outside.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable clean air summer!
